I just watched Greta because it’s been awhile since I have reviewed a thriller movie. It’s a movie about a young girl who finds a handbag belonging to the title character and they quickly become very close. It’s soon revealed that this woman is quite disturbed and our lead girl tries to unsuccessfully end all connections with her.
I am very mixed on this movie as some parts are quite tense while other parts are really stupid. We’ll start off with the pros and to give it some credit it’s quite nicely built up. You get to understand both the lead girl, Frances, and Greta and you get where they are both coming from. Though it doesn’t take long for Frances to start looking like a big idiot whilst Greta is like a total lunatic. Chloe Grace Moretz as Frances was good in parts though I’m a bit mixed on her overall performance. Isabelle Huppert was great as Greta and their performances are supported by a great supporting cast. The movie is very well shot and is pretty good at being tense.
There is a tense scene where Frances’s best friend is being followed by Greta and she’s sending photos of her friend to Frances. It’s a pretty good scene although, when you think about it, it doesn’t make much sense on how this scene started. Yeah, now we’re heading into cons. Frances gets photos of her friend in a well populated bar and she tells her friend to leave through the back entrance where it’s not so populated!
At this point in the movie Greta becomes a supernatural being where she can teleport right in front of you, vanish into thin air and, of course, it comes with dramatic music cues. It’s super cheesy, especially later on in the movie where logic is swept under the carpet to become more like a typical horror movie. By the third act of the movie it becomes a rip-off of Misery and it’s around this point that I began to lose interest a bit because it was so stupid.
That’s pretty much it. It was a pretty good thriller that turned into a really stupid movie. It’s the performances that hold the movie together so a big old 6/10 for me. If this review some what grabs your interest than go for it because I am honestly indifferent.
The Oscar bait movies are starting to die out now and it’s time for the rise of the blockbuster movies. Starting with our first superhero movie of the year and slowly but surely more horror movies. Yay! There will be alot more reviews coming your way in the coming weeks so until then I’m currently working on The Disneyathon Part 5: The Silver Age so expect that in the next couple days. Until then I have been The Blog Complainer, Signing Out.
