Is this a good audition to be a roadie for Queen?

Bohemian Rhapsody is my most anticipated movie of the year next to Aquaman. Queen is my favorite band ever and that’s mostly because whenever you hear one of their songs you instantly know its Queen because of how unique they are. This movie has been in development since 2010 and it’s been kind of worrying that it might turn out bad with Sacha Baron Cohen being rumored to play Freddie Mercury and the conflict that came with that and the directer Bryan Singer being fired almost near the end of filming and then having someone else finish his movie.

Good thing this movie isn’t a blockbuster movie but just a bio pic and you’re probably asking is Bohemian Rhapsody good?  Yes it’s very good. But it does have its problems so we’ll go through them first.

Under Pressure

So this movie isn’t about Queen (the title has you fooled) but it’s about the rise and fall of Freddie Mercury, the only character you’re going to care about by the end of the movie. While the supporting cast wasn’t bad they felt underutilised, especially the other members of Queen who kind of just sat back in Freddie’s shadow until the plot called for them to speak up later on in the movie.

It’s not until we get to the second act that they start to focus on Freddie’s homosexuality and then it was really only on the surface and felt kind of skimmed over. I completely got behind his relationship with Mary but they never really focused on any of Freddie’s relationships with his male partners which kind of annoyed me since this is the third movie I’ve seen that brushed over the homosexuality part of their movie. For Bohemian Rhapsody I understand why they did this but I would have preferred if it was a bit more developed.

This is as gay as Hollywood allows it.

There are other things that I felt should’ve being explored more and things didn’t really pick up until closer to the end.  There are little things too that bothered me as a fan of Queen, like I was disappointed that they didn’t play Bicycle Race or Flash Gordon. Come on, they’re great! But I’m going to stop complaining now because I don’t feel like it anymore.

I Want To Break Free

If you’re only here to know if the music is good then I would tell you to just buy the soundtrack right after seeing this movie. The music and Rami Malek’s performance is the highlight of the movie. Learning how they came up with some of their most famous songs I found the most interesting parts in the movie and any scene where they’re all together discussing the state of the band is really good.  The music is pretty spot on to the point that I’m not sure that Rami Malek just lip synced over the original songs or he actually perfectly recreated Freddie Mercury’s distinct voice. Either way his portrayal of Freddie Mercury was really good.

As I said earlier, it picked up for me when Freddie had his fallout with the band because everything before that felt a bit rushed especially how they rose to fame. The ending of the movie was annoyingly inaccurate in regard to timing of when Freddie found out he had AIDS but I did like the finale with the Live Aid concert that was pretty awesome. It’s quite funny at some points; there are some touching moments through the movie, it’s very well shot and the best part of the movie is the scenes where Freddie is with his family or when he’s with the love of his life (Mary, not his bland boy lovers) and pretty much every scene after they play Another One Bites The Dust.

Hey, look a fake concert crowd.

All We Hear Is, Radio GAGA

Bohemian Rhapsody is a good crowd pleaser.  It’s got pretty much everything you want from a Queen Movie. (This is coming from a Queen fan.)  It does its job with some things not working so well and other things working exceptionally well.  7/10.  A must see for any fan of Queen or if you are a general movie goer then it’s still worth a watch.

Well that’s the end of another post from me, guy who doesn’t believe in consistency. Support the arts if you want to see me make up my own album, it’ll give me something to do for Christmas.

I’m The Blog Complainer, Signing Out.

I review stuff and hate on everything you ever loved. But I’m still a super nice guy and make pretty entertaining content.

Bohemian Rhapsody The music sequences in the movie won the heart (mostly because we are a fan of Queen) while Rami Malek aced the role. Watch to know whether this movie is loved by the audience as much as we love Freddie Mercury or not.
