Thor was a bore, but now he is a wise cracking joke machine just like the other Marvel Heroes. Which for some reason doesn’t bother me?
Pre-Review: I’ve talked about 8 different movies so far and only one of the. m is a superhero movie. So I thought it’s fair to talk about another superhero movie. I know the new Avengers movie just came out & I will review it at one point just like I’ll review Blockers one day (Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten). But this one has been on my to-do list for awhile so I’m going to tell you my thoughts on this movie. Also I may be giving away some minor spoilers but I won’t be spoiling the whole movie if that makes any sense?
Plot: Thor (Chris Hemsworth) & his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) gets lost on another planet ruled by The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) who makes Thor go into gladiatorial fights. But Thor needs to return to Asgard to stop his evil sister Hela (Cate Blanchett) from taking over the nine realms.
The Best Thor Movie Ever: Thor has been around for about 6 years now & I’ve never cared about him at all besides he has a nice body & has a pretty cool hammer. The first two Thor movies feel pretty much the same they’re both boring, both bland & they’re both forgettable. This one took me by surprise. The director Taika Waititi took Thor into a different direction. It became more colourful, more exciting, taken way less seriously & it’s actually funny unlike those other Bhor movies. By Thor standards this one is my favourite by far. Try and convince me I’m wrong.
The Characters: Let’s start with Loki who was the best character in the other Thor movies because he was the most fun & everyone else sucked. But in this movie everyone is way more fun than Loki so that makes him kind of stable compared to the other characters. Tessa Thompson was good in this movie but her character is just someone with a sad backstory & that’s about it with her. Jeff Goldblum was a lot of fun, Korg (Taika Waititi) the rock guy was also a lot of fun too.
This next character I would consider a spoiler if the marketing didn’t show this character everywhere & that’s The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Mark Ruffalo was excellent & his character is my favourite in this movie next to another character I will mention in a bit. The Hulk & Bruce Banner had a lot of good banter with Thor & some other characters & this is easily his best movie. Then there is the villain Hela who is just another Marvel Villain pretty much. Compared to the other villains from 2017 she is the most boring because she has nothing to her except wanting to take over the universe. Cate Blanchett looks like she is having a ball but her character is nothing amazing. But at least she’s better than that evil elf guy from Thor: The Dark World.
Lastly we have Thor who is the best he has ever been. He is given way more personality than before which ruins the other versions of Thor for me. Chris Hemsworth is really good in this movie & he’s my favourite next to The Hulk. Some people make hate that Thor is just another Tony Stark or Rocket Raccoon the reason I like this is because Thor is still serious when he needs to be but he also has a lighter side to him that just adds to his character & makes him way more interesting. Also Natalie Portman & her boring friends are gone too which I’m grateful for. (They held the guy down, I’m glad they’re gone)
The Marvel Formula: I do like this movie but it isn’t perfect. I mentioned Hela is just another Marvel Villain my main complaint with this movie is it heavy follows that standard Marvel format. I love that Taika Waititi has brought some new life into Thor but even he can’t get away from that safe predictable the Marvel Formula. There are some jokes & fun moments but at the end of the day it still follows that same old Marvel Formula.
If you’re not familiar with this formula well here is every Marvel movie in a nutshell – A minute long Marvel Logo to remind you watch what you’re watching, Start the movie with a cool action scene or have a boring scene that connects to the main plot, Main Character discovers something new about himself or if it’s a new character set-up a boring origin story, The Hero or The Hero & a team of comedic reliefs go on an adventure or a self-discovery journey, Meanwhile Villain plots their evil plan, fallout between heroes, in middle mention The Infinity Stones or have Stan Lee in the background, Heroes discuss plan for final battle, Epic final battle, Villain dies, Hero forgets about adventure, roll credits & set up the next movie so that movie can set up the next movie. See what I mean.
Also the first 20 minutes where Thor & Loki have to tie in the loose ends from the last movie & Thor meets Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) I found that whole part extremely boring. Lastly Thor needs to get back to Asgard to safe everyone from his sister. Which is fine but I wished they had someone there that isn’t an extra to go & rescue besides Idris Elba. They killed off all of Thor boring friends like their extras & his dad is gone too so who’s left? Matt Damon is in this movie for 2 minutes so go & save him I guess.
Marvel’s Contest of Champions: The best part of the movie is on the gladiator planet. It’s colourful, it’s looks nice to look at, it’s funny & there are a lot of colourful characters to get attached too. It’s a good time & that fight between Thor & The Hulk was pretty damn cool too. That’s about it. I can’t tell you much about the soundtrack because it’s so forgettable that I don’t remember hearing it Besides The Immigrant Song which is just awesome.
Final Thoughts: Besides being just another Marvel movie I had a really fun time. It’s similar to that new Guardians of The Galaxy movie but the characters aren’t as developed. It’s the best Thor movie by far & I think it’s a 7/10 it’s not a great movie but it’s a good time so I think it’s worth one watch if you haven’t seen it. But I think you’re better off seeing Taika Waititi’s other films if you want to have a really good time.
Those are my thoughts on Thor: Ragnarok if you agree or disagree please let me know in the comments. If you can share it with your loved ones that would be great and if you haven’t notice I’m a huge fan of movies & TV Shows and I’m willing to suffer for my audience (If I have any) so let me know on what I should review next. (My next review might be The Avengers: Infinity Wars or something I’ve been working that could be a good monthly tradition)
Thanks for reading this review and I’ll see you again in the next review.
