*It’s also the first review I ever wrote.
I recently saw Black Panther only just today and it’s the first black centric superhero movie in The Marvel Cinematic Universe. I know I’m like a month late according to my simple Google search of the movie. (Which I definitely didn’t just search while writing this) But I thought my first ever review should something that’s still out in the cinemas and a modern blockbuster. (Also this is my first time doing this so don’t be to mean to me) Anyway enough rambling here’s my thoughts on Black Panther.
The plot follows young prince T’Challa aka The Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) who after the events of Captain America: Civil War (Which If you want my thoughts on that then please let me know) has now been offered the role as king of the made-up country called Wakanda. During the opening we learn the history of Wakanda & The Black Panther and we learn about a piece of metal called Vibranium that helped made their city so technologically advanced than the rest of the world. But an Arms dealer named Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) plans to sell some Vibranium to the CIA Black Panther and his team to decide to capture Klaue.
If you’re familiar with these movies by this point you’ll have a good idea how this movie will play out as you watch it. Origin Story, Likable Hero, quirky Side Characters, Warrior Person, Old Wise Characters who are very likely to die, Weak Villains and a lot of CGI. Black Panther has a lot of these elements but is also does a good job at standing on its own, with a rather interesting story that you could get into and doing a good hob at making Wakanda’s history and law another interesting setting in The MCU.
Chadwick Boseman is a decent main lead. He doesn’t do anything special for me or anything worth remembering. Some of the side characters make do a good job in their roles like T’Challa’s little sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), T’Challa’s role guard Okoye (Danai Gurira) and CIA Agent Everett Rose (Marti n Freeman) the rest of the cast do a decent job for their particular roles. They don’t really stand out as much as the villains. Which I’ll get to a bit.
My main problem with Black Panther it’s just too predictable and is it just me or these movies are getting more fake looking as they’re being release. For example two fights when T’Challa is forced to fight some big strong guy to protect his mantle. One moment that I won’t spoil (Unless you want me to spoil) was ruined for me because before the movie even started my theater showed a trailer for Avengers: Infinity Wars that made a suspenseful scene mean nothing to me. I could counter that by saying, again it’s too predictable.
This leads into my next problem is the action scenes. Not that Car Chase half way through the movie. But more the hand to hand combat scenes where everything is just quickly cut together that you have no idea what is going on. I seriously couldn’t tell who’s hitting who for most of these fights. it also doesn’t help the ones with The Black Panther suit don’t convince me at all that they’re real. The fight scenes look very messy to me and more a headache than entertaining action scene.
Let’s talk about the Villains because they’re always the best part of these movies. They’re either really boring one dimensional obstacles, or stupidly cartoonish and forgettable. Klaue fits right into catergory 2 while also doing a good job at reminding of Jesse Eisenburg’s Lex Luthor and the cartoonish Nazi’s from Wonder Woman. The other Villain Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) worked better and was much more interesting and they probably should’ve got rid of Klaue and kept Killmonger.
I have a feeling no matter what I say you’ll see this movie no matter what I say and tell me I’m been too harsh. Which I maybe but that doesn’t mean i don’t like this movie. In the end it was a pretty good time. I didn’t hate this movie or love it. It fits right in the middle for me comparing it to the other MCU Movies. If someone asked me if they wanted to see it I would probably say ‘Only if you’ve seen the other MCU movies or you’re really curious’. Since I can’t do halves on this Website I would give it a 3 1/2 out of 5 stars Above Average and a pretty enjoyable time.
Those are my thoughts on Black Panther if you agree or disagree please let me in the comment section. Also I mentioned earlier this is my first time doing this so please give me some feedback and if you have suggestions on what I should review next then please let me know.
Thanks for reading this review and I’ll see you again in the next review.
